Did you know?
That we compost all of our waste? Yeah that’s right, all of the veggie scraps that are left over from your juice cleanse are delivered to our composting partner! It is then decomposed back to nutrient rich soil for our community farms and gardens in D.C.!
I encourage you to do the same if you can. All of that “trash” that ends up in your bins that is biodegradable can be composted to make nutrient rich fertilizer for your home or community gardens. It is actually pretty simple, possible even indoors under your kitchen sink~ without any funky smell! Red wrigglers, they are the only kind of worm that can survive in a plastic bin. Make sure you get those little guys. The key to keeping the funky smell out of your kitchen is to maintain the balance between nitrogen, and carbon. You want more carbon sources than nitrogen~ about 7 times more.
Nitrogen is anything green that’s biodegradable and carbon is cardboard, paper, newspaper, and magazines sources. Make sure to take off any tape on those boxes. Another key step for a successful worm bin is to keep the environment aerobic. Make sure the bio waste is fluffy and aerated when placed in the worm bin nicely shredded with plenty of spaces in between so your decomposers can crawl up and down each bin. Easy peasy! The health of our top soils is critical for our future food security. Lets do our part (:
